10p Burt’s Bees copycat lip balm


A few months ago, I stumbled across this post on how to make burt’s bees style lip balm for 8 cents a tube by broke and healthy (be sure to check out some of their other posts – there’s some great stuff on there!) Since I go through quite a lot of lip balm I thought it might be worth trying to make my own for a fraction of the cost. Burt’s Bees is notoriously expensive (£3.69 for 4g), using only high-quality and natural ingredients. However, I soon found out that I could use the same natural ingredients to make my own lip balm for about 10p for 4g. And when I discovered how simple the process is, I found myself wanting to make lip balm for everyone. “Bring me your empty tins and I will fill them with balm!”

The original recipe from broke and healthy included lanolin, rosemary oil and shea butter, but in order to avoid buying new ingredients I thought I would try to use only beeswax, coconut oil and peppermint oil (which I already had on hand). It turns out that this works fine too!

I got my beeswax for free from a friendly honey-vendor at my farmer’s market. Its a by-product of the honey-making process and you don’t need very much of it so I would recommend asking around. If you can’t find any for free, take a look online. I had coconut oil and peppermint oil at home already, but you can get these at health food stores or online as well.



  • 10g beeswax
  • 20g coconut oil
  • 10 drops peppermint oil (this is a very rough estimate – just go with your gut)
  • empty lip balm containers/empty tin mint boxes/small glass jars


  1. Melt the coconut oil and beeswax on low heat – either on the stove or in the microwave (warning – the container you use will be really difficult to clean afterwards because of the wax)
  2. Add the peppermint oil
  3. Pour into your desired container and allow to set

P.S. My lip balm ended up being quite solid, but this could just be because I was using it outside in the freezing cold. Please let me know if anyone figures out how to make it slightly softer (perhaps it was my omission of shea butter ?)
